DIY Yarn Scrap Ornaments

DIY Yarn Scrap Pom Poms The Neon Tea Party

One of the most common questions I get when teaching pom pom workshops is “what do you do with all those beautiful scraps?!” The truth is, I’ve been hoarding bags and bowls and tupperwares of them while I figure out what the heck I want to make. (Side note: Sam has been very confused as to why he can’t find a single medium-sized mixing bowl to cook with. Little does he know they’re stacked in the window sill filled with pom pom scraps…)

One idea I’ve been holding onto for the holiday season is the one I’m sharing today: DIY yarn scrap ornaments! This project seriously could not be easier. Simply conserve your pom pom and tassel scraps, stuff them into clear glass ornaments and top off each ornament with a tassel to match! This project looks especially smart when you use the scraps from your holiday garlands, gift toppers, etc. to create filled ornaments to match – genius!

Remove the metal top of your ornament and fill to your liking. I filled my ornaments sparsely so you can see the top texture of the scraps, but they’d look equally fun filled all the way!

Next, make a tassel for each ornament using a yarn color from the scrap palette – it’s a fun way to help the colors in your ornament pop. Make your tassels on the narrow side of your Loome tool following the instructions in our Online Craft Studio!

Connect a tassel to each ornament using a jump ring and flat nose pliers, and voila!

Another fun use for your extra scraps: make colorful “snow” to sprinkle around your small trees and holiday villages on display!

You guys have no idea how much it pains me not to have a tree to deck out, being the nice Jewish girl that I am. So please do me a favor and take advantage of this fun ornament idea for us both! Then post pics and tag @theneonteaparty so I can see. 😉

This is my last DIY blog post for 2018 — I can’t even believe it!! Maybe I’ll sneak in some closing thoughts before we ring in the new year, but in the meantime, I’m looking forward to planning lots of beautiful and educational content for you guys in 2019. Think: better photos, more videos, guest contributors and lots and lots of fun ideas for you to try at home. I can’t hardly wait!!!

Wishing all those celebrating a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year to all!!!!

Peace, love & neon,

Marisa
