DIY Heart Friendship Bracelets
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so of course we had to sneak a seasonal DIY project on the blog! With friendship bracelets on the brain since the launch of our friendship bracelet DIY kit last week, this heart friendship bracelet pattern is our project obsession du jour! Seriously, I am totally hooked and can KNOT stop knotting up these sweet little hearts.
We love to pair these sweet heart FBs with The House That Lars Built’s adorable Valentines cards that call for friendship bracelets tied to them. Can you think of a happier valentine to receive in the mail?!
In our version of the heart friendship bracelet tutorial, I’m showing you a few fun tricks to customize your heart bracelets to your liking, including:
- how to finish your bracelet with braids (my favorite way to finish friendship bracelets!)
- how to alternate heart colors
- and how to hack the tutorial to make a bracelet in half the time (!!)
I have a sneaking suspicion you’re going to be just as obsessed with this pattern as I am! Let’s jump in and find out. 🙂
YOU’LL NEED:
- Omegacryl yarn or embroidery floss (two colors for each bracelet)
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Tape or safety pin
*ALL ITEMS PICTURED ARE INCLUDED IN OUR FRIENDSHIP BRACELET DIY KIT!*
Step 1: Cut eight 32″ strands – four in each of the two colors. Tie all eight strands together about 3″ from the end, then tape or pin down your knot and organize your strands in the following order: A B A B B A B A. Your “A” color will be the color of your hearts if you’re not alternating heart colors, so order your colors accordingly.
Step 2: Start the pattern by making two chevrons. You can learn how to knot chevrons as well as proper knot tying technique here.
Step 3: Next, take the second strand from the left and tie it around the left-most strand using a backwards 4 knot. Repeat to complete the knot. *Remember: each friendship bracelet knot consists of TWO knots!*
Now tie the second strand from the right around the right-most strand using a forwards 4 knot, and repeat.
You can find the tutorial for both forwards 4 knots and backwards 4 knots here in our chevron pattern tutorial.
Step 4: The strands that you just knotted should now be hanging out at the top of your bracelet. Leave those there for now and add a chevron to the six strands in the center.
Step 5: Use the same method as step 3 to knot the second-outermost strands around the outermost strands. This is the top of your heart!
Step 6: Just like in step 4, let the two outermost strands hang out at the top and add a chevron to the six remaining strands. This is the middle of your heart.
Step 7: Last, finish your heart by adding a full chevron with the two outermost strands. Your first heart is now complete!
Step 8: To continue with the same color hearts, add a chevron row then repeat steps 3-7. Keep going until your bracelet is long enough (approximately 13 hearts) and end with two chevron rows.
To alternate heart colors: Add two rows of chevron instead of one before picking up at step 3! Simple as that. Since the extra rows between hearts will add length to your bracelet, you’ll only need about 10-11 hearts to get the right length.
To finish your friendship bracelet: Braid a 2.5” braid and tie a knot to secure. Undo the starting knot and braid that end as well.
To make a thicker, quicker heart friendship bracelet: Double the amount of yarn, using two strands together for each strand. The bracelet will come out double the thickness with bigger hearts and take almost half the time. Only about 8 hearts are required to get the right length. You can try alternating colors here too!
Et voila! Keep practicing those hearts and you’ll be a master in no time. These heart friendship bracelets make the perfect gift for all your galentines (as does our Friendship Bracelet Kit!), and is the perfect accessory to rock come Feb 14.

To make a knot you have to grab the left string and bring it to its neighbor wrap the tail of the left string around the neighbor go under it and pulling the left strand through the space between the strands.Pull knot up towards the top knot, tightening to secure.
well the heart is a little hard for me so i have to keep doing it or copy the steps so i can get better.
